The illustration at the right shows how important milling is. When a surface is rutted and cracked as in the top drawing, it is very common to place an overlay to fill in the ruts and cracks to achieve a smooth surface. All too often after traffic resumes on the surface, the ruts and cracks quickly appear again. Why? It's because the subgrade was not milled to create a smooth surface for the overlay to be placed on. By milling, when the traffic resumes on the overlaid surface, there are no ruts or cracks to give way; thus, creating a longer lasting smooth surface.
